new whatsapp features - aug 2022 - leave group quietly

On Tuesday 9th August, WhatsApp announced three main new privacy updates. The first is the ability for users to check their messages without others knowing; the second, preventing people from taking screenshots of chats and finally leaving groups unnoticed by notifying only admins of the group! With over 2 billion users worldwide, and owned by Facebook (FB) mother Meta Inc., Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO, said the company would “keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations.”

These new features will be available to users from this month August 2022, so look out for the next Whatsapp update!

1. Leave Group quietly ( an Irish goodbye)

You can now leave a chat group without anyone else in the group knowing. Only the admins of the group will be notified. This is a digital equivalent of an Irish Goodbye – the act of leaving a party without telling anyone. This new feature will ensure there aren’t any awkward moments after exiting chats or conversations with friends/other members of the group, and where one normally get private messages from other users in the chat group saying you have left, asking why did you leave.

2. You can Choose Who Can See When You’re Online

There are normally times when you don’t want a particular person to know you have seen the message they sent you or know you are online. With this new feature, you can make it so that that particular person does not know you are online. Hence, they won’t know you are ignoring them or that you do not want to correspond with them at that particular time.

3. Block screenshots of “View Once” messages

This new feature, which is still being tested at the moment with the expectation of rolling out to users soon, adds an extra layer to View Once messages so people can’t take screenshots of it. The “View Once” feature came in last August 2021, where you can make a photo/video “View Once” which means it disappears from the chat after they’ve been opened, giving users, even more, control over their privacy. With this feature that came in from last year, users can still take screenshots of the photos/video before it disappears, but with this new screenshot blocking, users won’t be able to take screenshots of the View Once messages. For example, you might send a “View Once” photo of certain information or sensitive information such as Wi-Fi passwords with your friends on WhatsApp without worrying about it being seen by others later. The View Once message shows as “opened” once the message is viewed but then disappears.
